Increased Student Awareness of Events: It is ironic that at such a large and diverse University, where many events are held each day, that it is difficult for students to find out exactly when and where these events occur. I think that most students on this campus would like to attend various events that they are not aware of and that most groups would welcome more interest. I hope to increase student awareness of events by creating a website or weekly email that lists all cultural, social, educational and political events that may interest students. There is currently work being done on a calendar of MSA events that will be up on the MSA website soon. I hope to continue work on this calendar and make it a compilation of University sponsored events and local events in Ann Arbor. I believe a resource such as this would not only increase the awareness of interested students, but would also increase campus and town involvement.
Easier Transitions for Transfer Students: It is very difficult for students to transfer to the University of Michigan because of its population, large campus and the immensity of resources and organizations available. Making it easier for transfer students to get integrated into housing, their classes and organizations is extremely important to me since I was one of those transfer students not too long ago. My plan to ease this transition includes leaving classroom space available for transfer students, encouraging Michigan Housing to place transfer students together or form transfer living communities and, finally, creating a mentorship program where transfer students can be paired with other students who have similar interests or majors.
Increased Transportation and Parking on Campus: As many of us have experienced, walking from our houses or taking a bus from north campus to our classes can be tedious and even dangerous during Michigan's infamous winters. By increasing the number of busses, bus stop locations and parking on campus I believe we can eliminate some of this frustration. I would like the South Commuter route to include more stops near the residential and Greek areas on South Campus and run on weekends, faster transportation to and from north campus and increased parking areas for commuters and students living in resident halls. With these transportation improvements we can make this large campus seem much smaller and more accessible by all.
