Hello! My name is Karey Quarton, and I am a candidate for LSA-SG Representative. I'm originally from San Francisco and I'm majoring in English and Political Science. If elected, I generally want to enrich your Michigan experience by providing more opportunities for students to be involved in important decisions made at the University. I have several programs that I want to develop if I am elected to office.
1)BRING MORE MUSIC TO CAMPUS
I am aware of the student desire for more musical acts to come to campus, and I am optimistic about the University's ability to attract these big names. If elected, I would try to create collaboration between LSA-SG, the University Musical Society, and other interested groups who want to increase the number of musical acts that come through Ann Arbor in a financially sound manner. Music is an important part of the college experience, and at a large University like Michigan, we have the necessary resources to attract the best artists for our student body to enjoy.
HOW THIS BENEFITS YOU: Meet other students with similar music taste, and in general enjoy more musical events.
2)CREATE A FINANCE COURSE FOR NON-BUSINESS MAJORS
Many students don't take Econ because of its reputation as a weeder course for the Business School. However, the information in an Economics course is vital to combating real world issues like rising student debt, and to familiarize students with basic but important concepts like interest rates. I want to work with the Econ department to create an introductory course that will present this information in a less competitive environment, making this important knowledge accessible to all students, and providing them with the ability to better manage their finances.
HOW THIS BENEFITS YOU: Graduate with a basic understanding of finance even if you aren't a "math person," preparing you to avoid problems like debt and bad credit.
3)INCREASE STUDENT INPUT IN HIRING FACULTY
If elected, I would work to empower students by allowing them to participate in the process of hiring faculty. At many other colleges and universities, students play an important role in the hiring process by holding interviews for potential faculty. Currently, there is no opportunity for Michigan students to participate in these important decisions. I would like to see students play a more active role in this process by allowing them to interview potential professors in their department. This is one way to ensure that professors are held accountable to students as well as to the administration.
HOW THIS BENEFITS YOU: Make sure the best teachers get hired! Also, inform administrators that you want to be consulted in issues that directly impact you, and get more involved in the future of your department.
4) HELP NEW STUDENTS PICK CLASSES
I'm currently working on a project with LSA-SG to create a fact sheet for incoming freshman to help them pick classes during registration and throughout their freshman year. This sheet identifies popular classes for freshman and informs students about prerequisites needed to apply to specific programs like the Business School, Organizational Studies, Communications, and Public Policy. If elected, I would continue to expand this project to help new students navigate our large University.
HOW THIS BENEFITS YOU: Learn about fun classes and little known majors early so that you don't miss any important deadlines!
