Lobby for a student regent
The Board of Regents makes many significant decisions about the direction that the University of Michigan goes in, including appointing our University's president, appropriating our University's funds, and mandating Big House renovations. However, students currently have no voice in this powerful group of decision makers. Because of the way that our state government functions, it is nearly impossible to get a student member on the Board of Regents, despite the fact that other Big 10 schools have them. Wayne State and Michigan State, which are also affected by Michigan's constricting state laws, are pursuing a similar goal. Working with students at these schools, I will lobby the state legislature until our voices are heard.
Reform financial aid
Anyone who has applied for financial aid knows that the application process can be tedious and, at times, confusing. While it is certainly my goal to work with the University to increase the amount of financial aid granted to students, I also intend to make the financial aid process more transparent. Miscommunications often occur between financial aid officials and students/families, whether the complications are due to the furnishing of inaccurate information or improper notification of deadlines. By working with the financial aid office I aim to ease the financial aid procedure.
Expand Homecoming
It's great to be a Michigan Wolverine. Since this is the case, why shouldn't we have a blast celebrating our school pride at Homecoming each year? I served as a member of the Homecoming Select Committee last semester, and I know what sorts of events students want. As a Homecoming Director for our upcoming 112th Homecoming I intend to go big – more events that students want, a big-name band playing on campus, and a parade so big that it could only fit in the Big House.
